Θιβετιανής καταγωγής ακτιβιστές άναψαν δάδα έξω από την Αρχαία Ολυμπία στο πλαίσιο παγκόσμιας κλίμακας εκδηλώσεων διαμαρτυρίας για την κινεζική κυριαρχία στο Θιβέτ. Αποπειράθηκαν να ανάψουν τη δάδα εντός του αρχαιολογικού χώρου, αλλά εμποδίστηκαν από την αστυνομία.
Ομάδα περίπου δέκα Θιβετιανών φθάνοντας στην Αρχαία Ολυμπία το πρωί της Δευτέρας πέρασε τη γέφυρα και κατευθύνθηκε εντός του αρχαιολογικού χώρου χωρίς να έχει ζητήσει και να λάβει ειδική άδεια.
Επενέβη η αστυνομία και απομάκρυνε τους Θιβετιανούς χωρίς να γίνουν συλλήψεις.
Ο δήμαρχος της Αρχαίας Ολυμπίας Γ.Αηδόνης καταδίκασε την ενέργεια της ομάδας των Θιβετιανών και χαρακτήρισε την πράξη τους προσβολή για την Αρχαία Ολυμπία, τονίζοντας ότι η περιοχή είναι χώρος σύνθεσης και όχι αντιπαράθεσης.
Η διαμαρτυρία τους για δεκαετίες κινεζικής κυριαρχίας στο Θιβέτ εκφράστηκε ακολούθως με το άναμμα της δάδας έξω από τον αρχαιολογικό χώρο της Αρχαίας Ολυμπίας.
Ανάλογες εκδηλώσεις διαμαρτυρίας έλαβαν μέρος σε παγκόσμια κλίμακα και θα συνεχιστούν έως την έναρξη των Ολυμπιακών Αγώνων στην Κίνα στις 8 Αυγούστου.
Οι εκδηλώσεις διαμαρτυρίας της Κυριακής ήλθαν με τη συμπλήρωση της 49ης επετείου από την εξέγερση κατά της κινεζικής κυριαρχίας στο Θιβέτ και με ζητούμενο να προωθεί το αίτημα της ανεξαρτησίας εν όψει των Αγώνων του Πεκίνου.
Στο Νεπάλ σημειώθηκαν επεισόδια σε διαδήλωση Θιβετιανών όταν η αστυνομία χρησιμοποίησε κλομπ για να διαλύσει πορεία προς την κινεζική πρεσβεία.
Στη γειτονική Ινδία 101 Θιβετιανοί πρόσφυγες επιχείρησαν να ξεκινήσουν μία συμβολική πορεία διάρκειας πέντε μηνών με κατεύθυνση το Θιβέτ, αλλά εμποδίστηκαν από την αστυνομία.

TORCH BEARERS HARASSED, FOLLOWED BY CHINESE AND GREEK SECURITY

Olympia, Greece – Tibetans launched the Tibetan Freedom Torch Relay in Olympia today under intense scrutiny and harassment from Greek police and 15 to 20 Chinese government officials.

Despite the excessive police presence, the twelve Tibetans carried out the lighting ceremony in frontof the ancient archaeological site of Olympia, Greece, pre-empting hina’s Olympic Torch Relay launch there later this month. The TibetanFreedom Torch represents the hopes and aspirations of the Tibetan people or freedom and justice and will be carried to more than 20 countriesworldwide, reaching Tibet on the eve of the Beijing Games. The Freedom torch also highlights Tibetan opposition to the Chinese government’s politically motivated plan to carry the Olympic Torch through Tibet and o the top of Mount Everest.

“China’s Olympic slogan, “One World, One Dream,” rings hollow for Tibetans, who under Chinese occupation have been denied the right torepresent our nation at the Olympic Games,” said Tsultrim Dolma Gope, a Swiss-Tibetan shot-putter and Team Tibet member. “We are lighting theTibetan Freedom Torch to show that young Tibetans are determined to one may compete under the Tibetan flag.”Tenzin Dorjee, the Tibetan-American detained last April in Tibet for protesting China’s trial ascent of Mount Everest with the Olympic Torch,was one of the torchbearers. “The flame of Tibetan freedom burns brightly in our hearts,” said Dorjee. “Today, 8,700 kilometres fromBeijing, we were watched and harassed by 20 Chinese government agentsand dozens of Greek police. The intense opposition to our peaceful torch ceremony underscores China’s constant repression of Tibetans’ undyingdetermination to regain our freedom. Despite this opposition, theTibetan Freedom Torch will carry the message of truth and resistance worldwide, exposing China’s Olympic lies. ”“China’s so called “Journey of Harmony” makes a mockery of the trueOlympic ideals of peace and unity amongst nations,” said Kelsang Gope, arepresentative of the National Olympic Committee Tibet. “On the contrary, instead of upholding these ideals, the International OlympicCommittee’s main concern seems to be the pursuit of its own businessinterest and that of its corporate sponsors. The participation of Team Tibet in the Games would have exposed the hypocritical show that theBeijing Olympics represent.” In December 2007, the International Olympic Committee rejected Team Tibet’s official application to compete at theBeijing Olympics.

The lighting ceremony included traditional Tibetan incense offerings by five “Lhamos” or Tibetan goddesses, and the singing of the TibetanNational Anthem. The Freedom Torch lighting ceremony also marked thecommemoration of the 49th anniversary of the 1959 Tibetan National Uprising when tens of thousands of Tibetans in Lhasa and across Tibetrose up against China’s occupation of their homeland.

Re-entered the archaeological site of ancient Olympia

Minutes ago we re-entered the archaeological site of ancient Olympia, bringing the Tibetan Freedom Torch to the Temple of Hera, the site where the lighting of the first Olympic torch took place. It was moving and inspiring to see Tsultrim Gope, the representative of Team Tibet, hold the Tibetan Freedom Torch in the location that the Olympics was born.

Earlier this morning 15-20 Chinese officials, with the cooperation of the local police, stopped us from entering this site. The officials had arrived in Olympia on Sunday, one day after we arrived, clearly with the intention of monitoring and preventing our activities. We carried out the symbolic torch lighting ceremony outside the gate of ancient Olympia, outraged that even thousands of miles away from Tibet, in the remote Greek countryside, the long arm of Chinese oppression was still able to reach us.
We have now successfully brought the Tibetan Freedom Torch in the original site of ancient Olympia in spite of Chinese government efforts to stop it. This torch represents the real commitment of the Tibetan people and our undying determination to regain our freedom.
